How this calculator works
Drive time is your total distance divided by your average speed: driving hours = distance ÷ speed. Stop time is the number of planned stops multiplied by how long each one takes, converted to hours: stop hours = (stops × stop duration) ÷ 60. Add the two together for the total trip time. Results are shown as hours and minutes rather than decimal hours, since "7.5 hours" is harder to plan around than "7 hr 30 min."
Worked example
With the defaults — 450 miles at 60 mph, with 3 stops averaging 20 minutes each — driving time is 450 ÷ 60 = 7.5 hours, or 7 hr 30 min. Stop time is (3 × 20) ÷ 60 = 1 hour, or 1 hr 0 min. Add them together and the total trip time is 8.5 hours, or 8 hr 30 min. Slow the average speed to 50 mph for a mountain pass, or add a fourth stop, and the total updates instantly.
Frequently asked questions
Why use an average driving speed instead of a fixed highway speed?
A single trip almost never happens at one constant speed — you'll hit stretches of interstate, slower two-lane roads, and towns along the way. An average speed is a more honest planning number than assuming highway speed the whole way. If your route is mostly mountainous, has a lot of city driving, or crosses several urban areas, lower the speed input to 45-50 mph to get a more realistic estimate.
How long should I plan for each stop?
20 minutes is a reasonable default for a quick gas-and-restroom stop. If you're stopping for a sit-down meal, plan for 30-45 minutes instead — fast food or a packed lunch at a rest area is faster than a restaurant. Adjust the stop duration input to match how your group actually travels; it changes the total instantly.
Does this account for traffic?
No. This is a planning estimate based on the distance, speed, and stops you enter — it does not pull live traffic, construction, or weather data. Treat the result as a baseline and check a map app closer to departure for real-time conditions.
Should I add buffer time for the unexpected?
It's a good habit. Road trips run into things a calculator can't predict — a longer-than-planned lunch, a wrong turn, a closed rest stop. If you're driving toward a hard deadline (a flight, a check-in time, an event), many travelers add 30-60 minutes of buffer on top of the estimate. That buffer isn't built into the calculation above, so add it yourself based on how firm your arrival time needs to be.
