How this calculator works
Tolls are charged in one of two ways, so this tool covers both. In per-toll mode, you're charged a flat fee each time you pass through a toll plaza, so the total is simply the number of plazas times the average fee. In per-mile mode — common on modern all-electronic toll roads — you're charged a rate for every mile driven on the tolled segment, so the total is your trip distance times that per-mile rate.
Worked examples
Per-toll: 4 toll plazas at an average of $3.00 each comes to 4 × $3.00 = $12.00 total.
Per-mile: a 50-mile trip at a rate of $0.15 per mile comes to 50 × $0.15 = $7.50 total.

Why are there two calculation modes?
Toll roads charge in two different ways. Older toll roads and bridges usually charge a flat fee at each plaza or booth you pass through, so the total is just the number of tolls times the average fee. Newer all-electronic and open-road tolling systems instead charge a rate per mile driven on the tolled segment, similar to a meter. This calculator supports both, so you can match whichever pricing model your route actually uses.
Do toll rates vary by vehicle type or time of day?
Yes, commonly. Many toll roads charge higher rates for trucks, RVs, and vehicles with more axles than a standard car, and some — especially in busy metro areas — charge more during peak commute hours than overnight or on weekends. This calculator uses a single average rate for simplicity, so treat its output as a solid estimate rather than an exact quote for your specific vehicle and travel time.
Does having a transponder (E-ZPass, FasTrak, etc.) change the price?
Often, yes. Toll authorities frequently offer a discounted rate to drivers using an electronic transponder, while vehicles billed by license plate photo (pay-by-plate or toll-by-mail) pay a higher rate, sometimes with an added processing fee. If you drive toll roads regularly, a transponder can meaningfully lower your actual cost versus the estimate here.
